The Maltese passport is one of the strongest in the world. The reason is that its holders may visit 182 countries and territories without obtaining a visa in advance. 

In 25 of these countries, a visa is issued on arrival. In other 11 countries, an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) is required. In the remaining 120 countries and territories, a visa is not required.

The duration of stay depends on each country.

The Schengen states are included in the list of visa-free countries for Malta passport holders. Moreover, Maltese citizens can stay there without any time limit and are entitled to study and work there without any additional permits.

Maltese citizens only need to register at their place of residence in another Schengen member state to stay there for more than 90 days.

The UK. Maltese citizens can visit the UK easily and freely. However, after Brexit, citizens of Malta and other EU countries need to carry their passports with them rather than just an ID card.

The United States . The US is one of the visa-free countries for Malta passport holders. Maltese citizens can visit the United States and stay there for up to 90 days. To do this, they need to obtain an entry permit through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

The permit is valid for tourism, visits to friends and relatives, meetings with business partners and other short-term visits. However, you must apply for a visa for permanent work or long-term studies.
