An island state in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It consists of 992 islands: it occupies most of the archipelago of the same name and several other island groups. The closest neighbors are Vanuatu, Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Fiji and Kiribati.
The Solomon Islands are part of the Commonwealth of Nations. The head of state is the British Queen. The economy is based on agriculture, fishing and logging. In the bowels of the country there are large deposits of phosphates, bauxites, nickel, gold, lead and zinc, but they are not developed.
