To compose the Global Peace Index, three domains of peacefulness are used for evaluation. All domains have 23 indicators of the absence of violence or fear of violence in each country.
Domain 1: Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict — a country’s role in internal and external conflicts.
Domain 2: Societal Safety and Security — crime rates, violent protests, terrorist activity, relationship with neighbouring countries, political stability.
Domain 3: Militarisation — number of armed service personnel per 100,000 residents, military expenditure as a percentage of GDP, nuclear and heavy weapon capabilities, access to small arms.
Each country in the Global Peace Index is evaluated using a 1—5 scale. The lower the score, the better. The countries with the lowest average score were named the most peaceful.
