What do we know about Argentina citizenship by investment?
Argentine media reported the launch of the new citizenship by investment program on May 26th, 2025.
The minimum investment threshold will be $500,000. Investors will be allowed to direct funds into strategic sectors such as agriculture, energy, technology, and tourism.
The program is expected to launch in late 2025 or early 2026. Before applications open, a new agency will be set up under the Ministry of Economy to handle applications, approve projects, and support investors during the process.
The government has not included real estate purchases among the eligible investment options. This is a notable distinction from many other citizenship programs, where property remains one of the most popular routes.

Argentina’s new immigration policy
Shortly before announcing the citizenship by investment initiative, the Argentine government revealed its intention to revise the country’s immigration laws. The proposed changes will affect foreigners applying for permanent residence and citizenship by naturalisation.
No residence rights for parents of Argentine-born children. Parents will no longer qualify for permanent residence based on their child’s birth in Argentina.
Stricter requirements for permanent residence. Applicants must prove a stable income and submit a police clearance certificate.
Loss of residence due to long absences. Permanent residence will be revoked after 1 year outside Argentina. Temporary residence will end after 6 months abroad.
Continuous residence for citizenship. To qualify for Argentina citizenship, one must live in the country without leaving for 2 years. Any absence resets the clock. Children born in Argentina will continue to acquire citizenship automatically.
Choosing the best citizenship option: how does Argentina compare?
Argentina requires a higher investment than most other countries offering citizenship in exchange for investment. For instance, the investment threshold in Caribbean countries and in Egypt is around half that amount.
The fastest and most affordable route to citizenship remains Vanuatu, where a passport can be obtained within two to four months for a minimum investment of $130,000.
Argentina’s main advantage lies in its strong passport, which grants visa-free access to 163 countries, including the Schengen Area and the United Kingdom. However, the success of the program will also be affected by the time required to obtain a passport and the high investment threshold.
