Spain updates income requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa in 2026

  • Share:

Summary

An increase in the minimum wage in Spain changes the income thresholds for digital nomad visa applicants.

Amy Castro, investment immigration expert at Immigrant Invest, explains which Spanish residence permits are affected by the minimum wage increase and how to calculate the minimum income.

On January 29th, 2026, the Spanish government approved an increase in the SMI. The decision was adopted by the Ministry of Labour together with trade unions. The new rate applies retroactively as of January 1st, 2026[1].

With 12 annual payments, the SMI amounts to €1,424.50 per month. Income requirements are calculated as a percentage of the SMI: as the SMI rises, so does the required threshold.

The increase in the minimum wage has not affected the financial requirements for Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa for financially independent individuals. The minimum passive income requirement is linked to the IPREM index, which has not yet changed.

What is the new income requirement for the Digital Nomad Visa?

The main applicant demonstrates an income of at least 200% of the SMI. In 2026, this equals €2,850 per month or €34,188 per year. Previously, the requirement stood at €2,763 per month and €33,150 per year.

For a spouse, an additional 75% of the SMI is required — €1,070 per month or €12,821 per year. For each additional family member, a further 25% of the SMI must be added, which corresponds to €360 per month or €4,274 per year.

How to obtain a Digital Nomad Visa in Spain

The Digital Nomad Visa grants the right to obtain a residence permit in Spain. The basis is remote income earned abroad. The permit is issued for up to three years and may be renewed afterwards.

Applicants must prove their qualifications and employment status. An employment contract with a foreign company or ownership of a business outside Spain qualifies.
